a man with a dream
In 1995, fate brought a unique opportunity to a small corner of Somers, Wisconsin, near the western shores of Lake Michigan. A 2-acre farm, known locally as Krimmel’s Nursery, went up for sale at a price perfect for a young couple’s budget. That couple was recent Swiss immigrant Curzio Caravati and his wife, Maria, who saw a chance to make their dream of owning a small farm a reality. While embracing urban farming, Curzio also pursued his love for music, joining MGV Harmonia, Kenosha’s German Male Choir. Here, he connected with fellow gardening enthusiasts, Mike Pekoske and Richard Kopp. Together, they formed “Nature’s Bounty,” growing fresh produce for Kenosha farmers markets.
Garlic & more….
Later, Curzio shifted his focus to specialty garlic, rebranding as “Curzio — Garlic and More” and becoming a founding member of the vibrant Kenosha HarborMarket.
As the market flourished, Curzio’s passion for agriculture evolved from production to research. By 2015, he launched the **Kenosha Urban Farm Institute (KUFI)** to organize his expanding network of regional and international research projects. Over time, the original farm has been transformed into a hub for agricultural innovation. To ensure KUFI Farm’s impact endures, Curzio secured 501(c)(3) non-profit status in January 2024.
Our future vision extends beyond farming. KUFI aims to lead community discussions about the potential of a Blue Zone certification program, exploring how it could enhance public health, safety, and upward mobility in Kenosha. Could we increase longevity, reduce healthcare costs, and foster stronger connections? If the answer is yes, KUFI Farm.org aspires to play a key role in this transformation.

Looking Ahead: A Vision for Community Well-Being

We envision a future where KUFI Farm.org hosts educational retreats on the property, with round table discussions under the orchard trees instead of in boardrooms. Imagine a Bed & Breakfast experience where guests learn, connect, and plan for a healthier, more vibrant community.
